In response to the requirement for a low-cost, self-contained defense system capable of defeating evolving anti-ship missile threat, Raytheon developed SeaRAM ship self defense system. SeaRAM replaces the Phalanx 20-millimeter cannon with an eleven-round launch guide for the RAM missile. The combination of the highly capable Phalanx sensor suite and the deadly effectiveness of the RAM missile has been tested in sea trials aboard the Royal Navy’s HMS York and in launches at the US Navy’s China Lake, California, facility. The SeaRAM has been selected to protect the sailors and Marines who will be assigned to the USS Independence, the USN’s littoral combat ship.
